Robot Tourism Coming Soon To Korea: Robot Land Project Breaks Ground

samzenpus posted about 2 months ago | from the east-meets-westworld dept.

Robotics 31

Hallie Siegel writes "Korea's Ministry of Commerce, Industry & Energy (currently the Ministry of Knowledge Economy) first presented the idea for Masan Robot Land and its sister project – the robot theme park in Incheon (west of Seoul) – back in 2007, as part of a larger plan to stimulate Korea's robotic industry by generating public interest in consumer robots. From the article: 'It is expected that Phase One of the construction, which will include development of public facilities such as robot research development center, convention center, robot exhibition hall, and private facilities such as themed parks and youth hostels, will be completed in September, 2016. Phase Two, which includes development of hotels and condominiums, is expected to be complete by the end of 2018. The Masan park was originally scheduled to open in January of 2014.'"

Tourism and robots didn't work out so well.

But it's only fair that we get to visit the robot theme park now.
In a few decades, they'll come to visit us in the Zoo.

You're saying LESS tourists would be a bad thing?

But in the porn remake, Sexworld, everyone had a happy ending.

Worked out OK for the Simpsons at Itchy & Scratchy Land: Their best family vacation ever.

Robot Tourist? (0)

For a moment I read the headline as Korea is trying to attract robot tourist.

And the first thought I had was "Huh? Tourism through a robot?" (i.e. by teleprescence... Hey, that may not be all that zany a notion...)

First question... (0)

Anonymous Coward | about 2 months ago | (#46018839)

Can you have sex with them?

Which Korea? (1)

wonkey_monkey (2592601) | about 2 months ago | (#46019275)

Granted, it's fairly easy to guess (though you never know what Krazy Kim's planning), but there are two of them. The one this story is talking about is called South Korea. That's its name. It's not called "Korea."

Just trying to instil a sense of professional journalism here...

Korea? (1)

Brad Goodman (2906427) | about 3 months ago | (#46019609)

Cool Korea, or Crazy Korea?

I think I just answered my own question. It would be much cooler on Cool Korea, but probably funny as hell in Krazy Korea!!!

Great! (1)

Now, I will have to wait in line at the airport TSA checkpoint behind robots that want to go to South Korea. Like the couple with eight kids isn't enough! Or, will the robots just DHL themselves there?

Castles in the sky (0)

It's just pie in the sky. I live here. About 15 million credit cards just got seized and are undoubtedly in the hands of nefarious groups, despite the pathetic attempt at cooling hysteria by the government with their lies. Korea is not a world leader in robots and is well behind Japan and the US. They just copy everything Japan does. Japan has robots. Korea must have better robots.Korea is really just a house of cards. They would be better to take a look in the mirror and realize they're not ready for the level of technology they inject into their country. But they're stubborn and pig-headed. They never think of the social ramifications either and would have an ethical framework in place fort heir country, but not give a flying $hit if other countries they export to, don't. They're just in it for themselves.

It's about time! (1)

ScottDB (158711) | about 3 months ago | (#46020779)

Finally! Someone is looking out for the robots and building them a theme park. Now, if only they can mange to sneak out of the factories...

The correct answer (0)

Anonymous Coward | about 3 months ago | (#46020917)

... Masan Robot Land ...

They should build it over Love Land on Jeju Island. Contrary to the premise of 'I dated a robot' (Futurama), the future of technology is once again fucking and killing people. The USAF is already funding the later.

But I'm no criminal (1)

I would have been really interested in this. Actually, I almost went to Korea over the Xmas holidays anyway, but learned that they require fingerprinting now for non-citizens. I ended up staying in Hong Kong instead for the entire duration of my holiday just because of this point. I refuse to be treated like that.

I see some countries even require visitors to take an iris scan. That's insane.
