New VR Game Makes You a "Hollywood Hacker"

Unknown Lamer posted about 9 months ago | from the hacking-the-gibson dept.

Input Devices 38

An anonymous reader writes "An upcoming VR game for the Oculus Rift aims to let players 'be a Hollywood Hacker.' Listing inspirations from 'Johnny Mnemonic, Hackers, The Lawnmower Man, and the TRON films,' Polygon claims that the game 'does an amazing job at exploring those hacking tropes and often silly visuals to give the player a sense of control and power. This is "real life" hacking as filtered through a Michael Bay fever dream.'"

Sorry! There are no comments related to the filter you selected.

Hmm maybe this is how they've been hacking bitcoins.

I always imagined it looked more like this [youtube.com] .

That reminds me of how I took a dump this morning (-1)

Your grandmother opened wide and I dropped a steaming log in her quivering mouth.

It looked like Opera giving birth to a nigger baby, except I'm white and therefor respectable.

Uplink (4, Interesting)

tepples (727027) | about 9 months ago | (#46429541)

Other than the VR gimmick, does it do anything that Uplink [wikipedia.org] , a simulator of Hollywood hacking [tvtropes.org] that Slashdot covered over a decade ago [slashdot.org] , doesn't?

Re:Uplink (0)

Anonymous Coward | about 9 months ago | (#46429601)

If it doesn't break in the middle of the game it will be better than Uplink. It was fun right up until I found out that there is a specific task that if you don't complete within a certain time limit (that it doesn't tell you), you can't finish the story.

Re:Uplink (0)

chuckinator (2409512) | about 9 months ago | (#46432533)

The fun thing about video games is that almost all of them come with a reset button of some sort.

Re:Uplink (1)

GameboyRMH (1153867) | about 9 months ago | (#46429769)

Came here to post this (although I don't see anything wrong with a new game of the same style).

The visuals in this video remind me of the visualizations in the GiTS series.

Anyone who likes this might also like Retrovirus, a Descent-like game in a Tron-like world...it has LAN co-op and is sold DRM-free BTW.

Re:Uplink (1)

LarryRiedel (141315) | about 9 months ago | (#46429809)

Other than the 3D, sound and smell gimmicks, does going to Central Park do anything that a photo [wikimedia.org] doesn't?

Re:Uplink (0)

Anonymous Coward | about 9 months ago | (#46430633)

So they're porting the old C64 (et al) Neuromancer game to Oculus then?

what'd be cool is if one could somehow do an integration with Google Streetview + Google Earth to simulate being in actual places like Tokyo, Geneva, NYC, etc as you get bits for your in-game VR deck, access secret net ports to hack into databases, etc.

Isn't a new model on the way? I'd recommend waiting for that. They fixed plenty of hardware issues and all.

Re:The development kit is only $300 (1)

peckox (1267026) | about 9 months ago | (#46444723)

Don't expect the new development model anytime soon. They said they will release updated model shortly before the official release. And that is still somewhere between 6 months and one year away.

Re:Every keystroke causes a *BEEP* to emit (1)

Jason Levine (196982) | about 9 months ago | (#46430043)

Bypass button? Real hackers don't need a bypass button. They guess the real password in three attempts. (Of course, the first two are just for show.)

Watch, I'll hack Slashdot right now. *types "12345" as the Password* And to prove I'm in, I'll make a dupe story appear sometime in the next month.

Pshaw! A real hacker would do something more momentous. I suggest proving you're in by replacing their discussion system with a bizarre, piece of shit version and then start directing some of the site's traffic to it.

Number42 (3443229) | about 9 months ago | (#46430179)

Or just have one of the following prompts on the third failed password entry: "Mash buttons really, really fast to gain access" or "Hold X to hack."

Had the most interesting [ign.com] built-in "pseudo-hacking" experience for a video-game.

Even though it's nowhere close to the real deal. It did require the casual gamer to go through a command-line interface, guess a 5-digit binary code based on feedback about how many did he get right, solve a Kanji puzzle, find password in one directory and apply it to the other etc. The end result neatly tied in with the game where you could, for example, acquire a sword in the Matrix or set off an EMP.

Certainly much better than a Michael Bay fever dream.

underwhelming to say the least (0)

i think as far as exciting titles to launch with go they're better of sticking with CCP games valkyr or whatever its called

with real internet, you don't GO anywhere (1)

jinchoung (629691) | about 9 months ago | (#46432819)

i think this is the most misleading thing about cyberpunk and hollywood hacking tropes... that there is a cyberspace that actually exists in some allegorical way and that a user's avatar can actually "travel" from point to point looking upon and travel to floating pyramids of information. that analogy is totally wrong.

the far more accurate analogy is simply making telephone calls. if you are anywhere at all, you are right smack dab, ass down in chair in front of your computer. and your computer itself doesn't ever travel anywhere. all it is doing is sending and receiving messages. sure, you're getting messages from different nodes but that's just like receiving lots of phone calls from different people.

you can surreptitiously send messages that cause unexpected behavior or make a call under an assumed identity... but ultimately, all hacking is about sending and receiving messages...

and it's amusing how far hollywood and narrative fiction has to go to make that seem dramatically interesting.

Inspired by? (2)

FlynnMP3 (33498) | about 9 months ago | (#46433673)

The clip from "Swordfish" where Hugh Jackman is playing beat the clock hacking the password while getting a BJ from one of John's Travolta's sluts, I want that...

But then again, he had a gun pointed at his head... still an awesome way to go.

Seriously, give me a VR game like that and I'll be thrilled. Why pretend to be a slightly fancy hacker when you can go full fantasy.

Doubly wrong (0)

Anonymous Coward | about 9 months ago | (#46434031)

First: It looks more like Stand Alone Complex's nodal representation of connected system than anything Hollywood has pumped out.

Second: If you want a hollywood-hacking VR game (with actual typing of commands!) you should be looking at Quadrilateral Cowboy [blendogames.com] .

I remember when (0)
